DIY Fluo Breton

We all love a good Breton, non? Nice and stripy, goes with pretty much everything, pretty much anytime. However… we here at By Hand HQ are a little bored with the classic navy and white preppy chic. As you may have already guessed, we like to take ourselves a little less seriously, and have a lot more fun… We give you our DIY fluorescent Breton top!

You will need:

Step 1

Place your top onto a flat surface you don’t mind getting messy. Sandwich some newspaper or scrap fabric between the layers of the top to prevent the paint from leaking through. Use masking tape to mark out your stripes and secure the fabric down at the same time.

Step 2

Using either a paintbrush or a sponge, paint on your stripes! We used a sponge as you can simply dab the colour on keeping the top flat and still; a paintbrush encourages the fabric to move with each brush stroke. Allow the first side to dry before flipping the top over to repeat the process on the other side, being careful to match the stripes.

Step 3

When completely dry, turn your top inside out and iron to fix the fabric paint.

What kind of serious DIY projects would you like?

We love to have a bit of fun with quick and easy projects just as much as we love to take time over the more skilled techniques that make the best of our homesewn garments.

We’d love to hear any suggestions for DIY projects and/or sewing tutorials you’d like for us to provide!
