Sewing Patterns / DIY / Tutorials / By Hand Style
I absolutely cannot get enough of the current fashion obsession with crop tops + high waisted skirts / shorts / trousers combo. So, whilst admiring the pattern of an old duvet cover my mother made years ago, I grabbed my scissors and got to it.
The tools you need are:
To give a really neat finish I’m going to first press just a 1/4 inch of fabric inwards along each length.
Then, you need to fold that edge over to just a bit more than the width of your elastic and press down again (And yes, I totally did my nails – a little hastily – in preparation for this post!) Remember that you should decide the width of the bandeau simply depending on your personal taste and bust size – simply hold it up and see what you prefer.
Sew very close along the folded edge of both sides.
To measure how much elastic you need, simply pull it as tight as you’d like it around your chest and mark that length. Then just add on 1/2 an inch either side for a bit of seam allowance for where you’ll sew it together. You will need to do this for two pieces of elastic of course, one for the top and one for the bottom of your bandeau.
Attach a safety pin to one end, thread through and ruche as you go.
Now you’re ready for the final steps!
Seam the two ends together. NB you will have to go quite slowly as you go over the elastic. Once you’ve done that, try and cut the elastic down to as close to the seam as possible.
Now press seams open.
How I wore it: black jersey skirt from Cos / patent black and gold belt from my granny / earrings from a flea market in Philly and tape measure bracelet from Accessorize.
